Description
Summary:The college music educational experience is a time for students to grow as independent artists and thinkers, synthesizing the advanced knowledge learned in the classroom with the technical skills developed in applied study. Yet, the large ensemble rehearsal room remains a place where the potential for this synthesis is not fully maximized. This project proposes a model for integrated learning in the college wind ensemble where students can develop skills as decision-makers in a collaborative artistic environment.Ingolf Dahl’s Sinfonietta for Concert Band (1961) serves as the selected composition for this project. Because of the technical challenges posed by this work, the complex personal and historical contexts surrounding its composition, and the variety of relevant theoretical concepts, such as set theory, classical forms, and narrative theory, Sinfonietta presents rich opportunity for a fully integrated student learning experience. This study is in two parts: the first, an analysis of the work aimed at deriving deeper musical meaning; and the second, a guide to a comprehensive rehearsal curriculum, illuminated through detailed language, activities, and visual aids.
