Abstract | Artificial and natural teeth and metallic dental implants and restorations function is one of the most inhospitable environments in the human body. During 24 hours, teeth and restorations are exposed to a variety of eatables, form tea or coffee causing higher temperatures to ice or cold drinks causing lower temperatures; form fruit juices causing reduction of pH, milk or other products causing increase in pH in the oral cavity. They are subjected to larger temperature variations than most other parts, coping with cold of ice (0 °C) through to hot coffee and soup (60 °C). Thus they need to be selected very carefully. Before selecting a material for dental application, it is necessary to remember that the choice of the material depends on a number of factors like: (i) corrosion behavior, (ii) mechanical properties, (iii) cost, (iv) availability, (vi) biocompatibility, and (v) aesthetic appearance. Thus for the application of existing orthodontic materials as well as for the development of new dental materials, it is essential to have a comprehensive knowledge of these attributes. A lot iof work has been done by researchers on abrasion of teeth (artificial and natural) and corrosion of metallic dental materials. These, however, have focused on western life-style and thus have used experimental situations accordingly. There is practically no information available in the open literature on these issues under Indian conditions. The present work has thus been planned with the following broad objectives: 1. To study the in-vitro abrasion of artificial tooth and natural tooth using toothbrushes and toothpastes available in the Indian market. 2. To study the in-vitro corrosion of orthodontic strips and wires in water, aqueous NaCl solution, suspension of tooth pastes, aqueous extracts of spices and soft drinks. The results obtained are presented and discussed in this thesis. The resulting subject matter is arranged in five separate chapters. Chapter 1 gives a brief account of the natural tooth and various dental materials. Chapter 2 reviews the available published work related to abrasion of acrylic teeth and corrosion of metallic dental materials. Chapter 3 describes materials used and experimental methods and instruments employed during the study. Results of abrasion-and corrosion studies are presented and discussed in Chapter 4. Major conclusions and recommendations for further work are given in Chapter 5. List of References provides a comprehensive list of all the references cited in this work. Annexure-I incorporates the list of publications/presentations based on this work and their reprints as well as those of some other publications/presentations. |
