A discordância entre o "eu" e o mundo em Nove noites, de Bernardo Carvalho

This article discusses the discordance between the "self" and the world in the novel Nine Nights by Bernardo Carvalho. Through his textual choices, the writer personifies in his central character, Buell Quain, a deep discussion about the situation of the self before the requirements of civilization, which is a subject debated by Sigmund Freud in one of his most famous texts, Civilization and Its Discontents (2010[1930]). In this sense, based on this text, through the perspective assumed by the two narrators (FRIEDMAN, 2002) in Nine Nights, this study seeks to discusses the identity crisis that reached the suicidal character and, at the same time, to reflect on literary art as a space for the representation of the contemporary man's existential tensions.
