| Abstract | Research pertaining to LBGTQ issues has become increasingly more comprehensive. There is still a noticeable deficit in the current literature regarding the experiences of transgender people in America. African American trans men and trans women are even less equally represented in the current literature and, when they are mentioned, the experiences that are shared do not always adequately encompass a diverse range of perspectives regarding what it means to be African American and trans. It is also commonplace for the research to inform and shape the African American trans person's experience of being African American and trans instead of allowing the person to inform the research. As a result, many of the nuances and practicalities about the African American trans experience run the risk of being left unexplored. This dissertation provides a platform for African American trans men and trans women to enrich the current literature by openly discussing their experiences. |
