Summary: | Northern Argobba, which has above all become accessible through the publication by A. Wetter (2010), offers a series of linguistic characteristics. (1) It has preserved pharyngeals and laryngeals which can even be lengthened. Apart from the change (2) ww > bb there are also (3) other morphological consonant strengthenings. (4) The dental element of the T-stems and the personal prefixes shows a tendency towards deletion. (5) There is also a special laryngeal rule which can however be traced back to Old Ethiopic. (6) The perfect shows a conjugation modelled on the verbs with a weak third radical, in which it resembles Tigre. (7) Its article has been adopted from Oromo. |
