Abstract When the Jesuits first arrived in Canada, their Chinese experience was fresh in their minds, and there could be no question of too close an acculturation, even though this idea seems recently again to have come into fashion. With the Europeans holding to their essentally hierarchical concept of religion, there ensued a conflict between two widely differing notions of the sacred. This conflict ensured the failure of the missionary endeavor, for the Indian peoples could never accept the basically hierarchical concept that the Jesuits could not abandon.
