Abstract HRL has been developing an active antenna that overcomes the Bode-Fano bandwidth-efficiency limitations on both Transmit (TX) and Receive (RX) in the HF (3-30 MHz) band. The TX mode uses a switch-mode Radio Frequency Current Source (RFCS) amplifier to efficiently drive a 1-m normal mode helix beyond its natural resonance. The RX mode uses a high impedance buffer, together with the resonant matching network, to enable wideband reception. This paper presents a TX demonstration delivering QPSK to a dummy load with 5-10x more bandwidth-efficiency product than the Bode-Fano limit, and an RX demonstration with > 13 dB higher receive sensitivity than a narrowband conjugate match over most of the HF band.
