Description
Summary:In this study we use the Single Aliquot Regeneration protocol to perform Optically Stimulated Luminescence dating on mortar and bricks associated with the colonial period of Pernambuco, Brazil. As study subjects, we used yellow and red bricks, as well as mortar from the remains of the main gate of Fort Orange, in Itamaraca. We find that the mortar and yellow brick harbor similar chronological data, around 1,606 [+ or -] 37 CE and 1,609 [+ or -] 118 CE, respectively, consistent with the period when the main gate was built. However, the age estimated for the red brick, around 1,407 [+ or -] 19 CE, was not compatible with that of the building. This finding indicates that the red brick was originally intended to be used in older constructions, possibly in Leiden, Netherlands, and was later brought to the Americas, where it was used in the construction of Fort Orange. Overall, our results provide support for the possibility of using Optically Stimulated Luminescence dating and its Single Aliquot Regeneration protocol to estimate the ages of colonial mortars, including those of Pernambuco. KEYWORDS OSL dating, Colonial mortars, Colonial bricks, SAR, Forte Orange.
