Influence of two different rest intervals between exercises and training methods in strength performance/Influencia de dois diferentes tempos de intervalos entre exercicios e metodos de treinamento no desempenho da forca

The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of different intervals (20 seconds and three minutes) between exercises on repetitions, volume in each exercise and total volume. Twenty-trained men (23 [+ or -] 2.2 years, 74.9 [+ or -] 4.1 kg, 1.75 [+ or -] 0.03 m) divided in two groups (G1 an...

Description
Summary:The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of different intervals (20 seconds and three minutes) between exercises on repetitions, volume in each exercise and total volume. Twenty-trained men (23 [+ or -] 2.2 years, 74.9 [+ or -] 4.1 kg, 1.75 [+ or -] 0.03 m) divided in two groups (G1 and G2) performed test for verification of 10RM load in two nonconsecutive days. The exercises tested for the G1 were bench press and leg extension. The G2 performed the 10RM test for bench press and seated row. Forty-eight hours after 10RM test, the subjects performed bench press followed by leg extension with 10RM loads with three minutes rest between exercises. The second visit was conducted by G1 where the only difference from the initial visit was the interval between exercises, which was 20 seconds. The G2 performed same procedure, but the second exercise in both visits was seated row. The Student T-test no found significant differences on repetitions, volume and total volume in leg extension between exercises in different rest conditions (p = 0.34). However, when seated row observed the short interval resulted in a significant reduction in both on repetitions as volume, compared with three minutes rest conditions (p = 0.009). The total volume only decrease in G2 for the second exercise (p = 0,046). In conclusion, the opposite exercises with short intervals can lead to reductions on repetitions, volume in second exercise and total volume. Key words: muscle strength; intervals; exercise; physical fitness.
