Description
Summary:Synaptonemal complexes (SCs) representing paired chromosomes during the stage of meiosis were obtained from oocytes of 20, 1-day-old female chicken (Gallus domesticus) using a surface spread, wholemount method. Wholemount spreads of chicken oocytes revealed 39 pairs of chromosomes consisting of 38 pairs of homologous autosomes and an uneven sex bivalent (ZW). Features of the synaptonemal complex, including lateral elements, kinetochores and attachment plaques were well demonstrated. Unpairing (asynapsis) of homologous chromosomes was observed in 15.13 percent of all 373 oocytes studies
