Description
Summary:This manual is designed for teacher use for a 10-week course to prepare chronically unemployed adults to enter traditional clerical courses or job training programs offered by temporary-employment-agencies. The competency-based curriculum provides adults with basic skills in grammar, usage, reading, writing, listening, mathematics, keyboarding, and computers. Practice time for skills is built into the daily schedule and homework is minimal. The course requires four hours of instruction per day and is divided into four segments each day. It is set up as a fictitious company. Each week has a different theme to acquaint students briefly with some of the common operations of the business. The themes are receptionist; mail room; data entry; personnel secretary; secretary, quality control; sales and marketing; research and development; accounting and finance; manufacturing; and secretary to the president. The chapter format is as follows: list of competencies (math, English, office), suggested field trip, special materials needed, overview page of daily lessons, daily lesson outline, and exercises for each day, which may be photocopied for class use. Appendixes include sheets on which to score students on the competencies and bibliographies of supplemental texts and software. (YLB)
