Abstract Objective: To investigate the main causes of absenteeism in military police officers stationed in a Military Police Battalion. Methods: Descriptive, cross-sectional, quantitative approach study conducted in the archive of the Personal Section of a Military Police Battalion from Pernambuco. Data were collected from medical certificates in individual files of military police officers from 2009 to 2013 and analyzed according to the following variables: gender, age, length of service, rank or patents, activity, sick leave, number of days away and the International Classification of Diseases. Results: The sample included 599 military police officers of all ranks and patents. There was a prevalence of absenteeism in male police officers, aged 30-34 years and mostly soldiers, predominantly musculoskeletal diseases. Conclusion: This study showed the variables that characterize absenteeism and its recurrence among military police officers, which interferes with the battalion's work dynamics.
