Abstract The article deals with the possibility of student independent activity while learning psychological and pedagogical disciplines in higher educational institution. The experimental materials are the results of studies and generalization of the historical experience of students independent activity development at higher educational institutions (at the end of XX-beginning of XXI centuries) as a psychological and pedagogical workshop. Author's workshop reflects a thorough reassessment of the essence of students independent work in Psychological and Pedagogical Sciences, in particular the significant expansion and diversity of its types. The role of entirely new sources of information for self-employment, which have appeared and developed (information and communication technologies, computers in the educational process and entirely new ways of students independent work due to these changes) are showed. The need for the emphasis on students independent activity is not so much important on the accumulation and information retrieval, as in the skills that help to work with this information, they are to transform it into their own knowledge, develop necessary skills. It is indicated that the development of student independent activity must be accompanied by integration and content, forms, methods and means differentiation. The impact of media: obtaining, processing and using information is described. It is proved that it is necessary to create an adequate picture of the impact of the means of obtaining, processing and use of information by students. It is shown that independent activity is inseparable from the activities under the guidance of a teacher or educational activity on different types of occupations and determined journey of finding the maximum cognitive activity of the student, focus its activities on the creative reworking, methods of information search and structuring of the student, which the student can pursue independently. In the process of self-activity as a form of teaching psychological and pedagogical disciplines the effectiveness of the author's technique (workshop) based on its results were tested. The effectiveness of the theoretical propositions in the psychological and pedagogical workshop has been confirmed.
