Description
Summary:The use of characteristics for species distinction in dermatophytes over the last century is outlined. On the basis of molecular data, three main groups are recognized, largely coinciding with ecology and clinical data less so with taxonomic borderlines. One group consists mainly of anthropophilic Trichophyton species; the mainly zoophilic Microsporum species are paraphyletic to this group. The geophilic species are highly diverse. Adaptation to the human host is accompanied by a gradual loss of sexuality.
