Summary:Pedo-transfer functions were derived based on more than 180 soil profiles collected mostly in Germany but also at various locations in Europe to predict the mechanical strength of arable soils, and soil maps for Europe, Germany, or arable field on a farm scale were chosen to test the applicability of the available datasets at various scales and to derive reasonable soil strength or soil sensitivity maps. Results are presented on precompression stress, the relationship between precompression stress and actual contact area stress, and stress-dependent changes in air conductivity, and the mechanical and hydraulic soil properties are determined at a national scale based on precompression stress and contact area pressure.
