Description
Summary:Based on ethnographic research in County Clare, Ireland, this paper discusses the growing importance of tourism and negotiation in constructing local and trans-local cultural identity. Although tourists have long played an important role as arbiters of cultural identity through the depictions of their encounters with distant lands and different cultures, culture researchers have overlooked their nuanced roles as moderators of cultural identity. Specifically missing are studies that explore tourists and locals working together to construct cultural meaning. Framed by a symbolic interaction approach, the paper discusses the significance of interaction between tourists, locals and the mediating tourist industry in shaping meanings of Irish and Irish American cultural identity.
