Description
Summary:After a bibliography that runs to twenty-six pages, S.-S.'s nearly 100-page introduction provides an overview of the book's place in the canon, its literary unity, its use of literary genres and forms, its cultural and historical backgrounds, and its reception in both Judaism and Christianity. Regarding Qohelet's advice in 7:16 that one should neither be too evil nor too righteous, S.-S. sees Qohelet drawing on the contemporary Hellenistic idea of the via media in order to critique the view held by other Israelite sages, which was eventually embodied by Sirach, that the fear of God is expressed in observance of the Torah.
