Summary: | Measures adopted by New York city for controlling combined sewer overflows (CSO) are described. These measures were suggested by the U.S. EPA and integrated into the city's long-term CSO abatement plan. The following programmes are discussed: reduction of untreated wastewater bypassing; abatement of illegal connections; abatement of CSO and control of floatables. The impact of these measures on water quality and aquatic health is described. Total coliform concentrations in New York Harbour had declined by more than 50 per cent, 3 beaches had reopened and wet weather bathing advisories had been lifted or modified at the remaining beaches. |
