Summary: | A 2-year evaluation of a full-scale activated sludge plant was used to develop a control strategy for single- and two-stage suspended growth biological nitrification systems. The major control parameters were mixed liquor volatile suspended solids and dissolved oxygen concentrations in the aeration basins. These were changed as wastewater temperature varied to provide the solids retention times necessary for nitrification. Although satisfactory nitrification could be achieved at wastewater temperatures as low as 9°C with the single-stage mode, the two-stage mode was more stable at wastewater temperatures below about 15°C. The ability to change from one process mode to another provided desidable operational flexibility. |
