Description
Summary:The aim of this study was to evaluate in the effects of K+ on tail arterial pressure (TAP) and glucose metabolism in rats with obesity induced by neonatal administration of SMG (4 mg/day/SC from day 1t o11th after birth), a model with insulin resistance. Rats receiving saline instead SMG injections were used as controls (C). At the end of the 3rd month of life, half of the animals were put in a potassium enriched diet (K+content: 3.3 mEq/kg) (MSG-K+) and were followed for 12 weeks with TAP monitoring twice/week. At the end of the follow-up an oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT, glucose overload: 170 mg/kg) was performed in all animals. Areas under the curves of glucose (AUGC) and insulin (AUIC) and the insulin sensitivity index (ISI) were determined. Results: K+diminished TAP of all SMG-obese rats (from 114±4 to 104±3 mmHg, p<0.05) Conclusion: Dietary K+decreases blood pressure and improves glucose metabolism of SMG-induced obese rats. Improvement of insulin sensitivity may account for the effects on blood pressure.
