Ultra-high sensitivity in a photonic crystal superprism due to the curvature singularity of a dispersion surface

A superprism structure is shown to achieve refractive index sensitivity 3×10 4 deg/RIU with low optical loss. The sensitivity is drastically larger than previously reported values and is not due to slow light effect at a bandedge.
