Summary: | In this paper we propose a new surface simplification algorithm which produces high quality approximations of the original models. The geometric simplification is based on iterative edge contractions. To get a simplified mesh which fairly fits the original one, we introduce an accurate measure of quadratic error to characterize the geometric deviation introduced by edge collapse. In addition, we propose a vertex optimization process which moves the new vertex towards an optimized position. |
