Development and evaluation of a new real-time detection method of atmospheric turbulent structures by an airborne X-band Doppler radar

Description
Summary:This work is devoted to the detection of turbulent structures such as gravity waves triggered by convective activity and paves the way to indirect detection of some Clear Air Turbulences by airborne X-band radar. We describe a new analysis of Doppler information, which allows the retrieval of the 3D wind field around the convective structure and provides an early warning of severe turbulence. This method is assessed using synthetic data and applied to real observations.
