A method for studying ion channel gating under magnetic stimulation conditions using the whole-cell patch-clamp technique

A technique is described for the in vitro magnetic stimulation of cells using a coil mounted in the nosepiece of a microscope. The feasibility of studying ion channel gating kinetics under whole-cell voltage-clamp during application of intense transient electromagnetic fields is demonstrated.
