This paper is written with the end user-particularly the smaller end user (who probably accounts for well over 50% of all hazardous areas)-firmly in mind, and aims to highlight some of the key aspects which, if they are not already being so, should be considered and given careful attention. The real safety of electrical apparatus in hazardous areas is far more a function of installation, inspection and maintenance, than it is of the apparatus certification. However, the certification does have a very important part to play, providing that both the equipment supplier and the end user understand what the certification means. In determining the inspection and maintenance required, once the apparatus has been correctly installed, there is no substitute for understanding the protection concept applied, and ensuring that it is maintained in a condition which continues to offer that protection concept's assurance. A study of the type of faults which do come to light, especially faults noted by audit personnel and others who are not familiar with the site provides useful guidance and feedback to the responsible engineer for future installation, inspection and maintenance work.
