Abstract | In Personal vehicles, it is required to drive rear wheels at equal RPM to follow a straight line road and at different RPM while taking turns. This particular task is done using a mechanical differential. A mechanical differential is implemented using a different combination of Gear assembly. Since almost all vehicles are front wheel steered, so to keep the vehicle stable and avoid skidding of rear wheels around the corners Ackerman steering mechanism is used. In recent trends of Electric Vehicles (EV) since AC motors are used, it requires mechanical differential gear assembly to generate sufficient starting torque and cornering stability. This mechanism is conventional and reliable but it also has drawbacks like the increased kerb weight of vehicle besides mechanical gear assembly leads to losses (frictional, coupling, spot heating). Apart from this, there are certain problems in the electrical motor assembly like low starting torque, more physical size, and complex speed control techniques. It requires an inverter and its control circuitry which leads to an increase in weight and losses. This project describes that we can overcome these drawbacks using an electronically controlled differential. |
