Abstract Objetivo: Avaliar o efeito do treinamento de futebol na aptidão aeróbia de adultos jovens. Materiais e Métodos: Onze homens (24,27 [+ ó -] 3,80 anos; 73,44 [+ ó -] 8,31 kg; 1,82 [+ ó -] 0,12m; 22,31 [+ ó -] 3,14 kg/[m.sup.2]) participantes da equipe de futebol da Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Norte realizaram uma avaliação da aptidão aeróbia usando o Yo-Yo Intermittent Recovery Test 1 antes e após 5 meses de treino de futebol. Foram analisados o consumo máximo de oxigênio (V[O.sub.2max]) estimado, velocidade máxima e distância percorrida. Resultados: O teste t para amostra pareadas mostrou que não houve diferença entre pré e pós treinamento no V[O.sub.2max] (47,36 [+ ó -] 3,14 Vs. 47,28 [+ ó -] 2,64 ml.[kg.sup.-1].[min.sup.-1]), distância percorrida (1,31 [+ ó -] 0,37 Vs. 1,29 [+ ó -] 0,31 km), tampouco na velocidade máxima atingida (16,56 [+ ó -] 1,17 Vs. 16,36 [+ ó -] 0,93 km.[h.sup.-1]), respectivamente (p>0,38). Conclusão: Os resultados indicaram que o treinamento de futebol em atletas universitários não aumentou a aptidão aeróbia, avaliados pelo V[O.sub.2máx], tempo até exaustão e velocidade máxima atingida. These athletes underwent two assessment sessions in which the aerobic fitness was evaluated using the Yo-Yo Intermittent Recovery Test 1, from which the maximal oxygen consumption (V[O.sub.2max]) was predicted, as well as the maximal speed and covered distance was recorded. The test was applied at different periods of the training program, with a five-month interval. The paired t-test was used to compare measures at pre-and post-training, considering P<0.05.
