Summary:The life and career of artist Philip Mercier are featured. It notes that Mercier's background has been well served by the work of Ingamells and Raines, however, the lack in their research was truly coherent narrative of his life and undermined discussion of his work as an artist. It attempts to examine Mercier's life in light of new evidence up until his move to York in 1739. It also provides overview of Mercier's personal background and his art education as a face painter until he came to England with several major advantages over native artists for advancement in the newly established Hanoverian court.
