| AbstractList | Europe and the US have very different ways of stipulating quality criteria for compost. European countries can be divided into 3 categories with regard to their organic waste policies. Austria, Belgium/Flanders, Denmark, Germany, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, and Switzerland have policies that are fully articulated and implemented, sometimes to a very great extent. These 7 countries presently recover more than 85% of the separately collected and composted organics in Europe. In most cases, the support of home composting is part of this policy. In the 2nd category, Belgium/Wallonia, Finland, France, Norway, Italy, Sweden, and the UK have just started preparing or implementing a policy on collecting organics. Countries such as Greece, Ireland, Spain, and Portugal make up the 3rd category, in which no policy on separate collection has been prepared and mixed MSW composting is still being done. Direct quality classes of compost based on limited values for heavy metals only exist in Austria and the Netherlands. At present, no hygienic standards exist in Belgium.
