Description
Summary:The microbial indicator system used in assessing water quality and their specific density limits at least as applied in the United States, are generally ill-conceived, without exception poorly supported by epidemiological data, and frequently misapplied. This rather broad indictment of current practices is not original to the author of this paper. It paraphrases statements made by Henderson (1968) with regard to the then newly proposed fecal coliform, recreational water quality guidelines-these specific guidelines are those currently accepted by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and adopted by most of the individual states (Cabelli, 1980a).
