Description
Summary:Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is a type of cancer of the myeloid line blood cells. It starts in the bone marrow, but it can spread to other tissues, including the lymph nodes, liver, and central nervous system. Due to chemotherapy, patients can become more susceptible to neutropenic ulcerations and consequently are highly susceptible to multi-drug-resistant pathogen infection. Four female adult patients were under different chemotherapy protocols for AML when clinical examinations showed an initial ulceration and necrosis pattern in their inserted gingiva associated with pain and fever. Bacteriological profile exam and antibiogram for pyogenic bacteria in gingival crevicular fluid were performed. Analyses indicated multi-drug-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa. All patients were treated with broad-spectrum antibiotics, yet 2 cases evolved to disseminated intraoral necrotic tissue and sepsis. Both severe cases ended in death. The other 2 patients recovered from the infection and were able to complete the chemotherapy cycle.
