Description
Summary:Ectodermal dysplasia (ED) is defined as a group of alterations in gene molecular pathways related to the development of ectodermal structures, including the teeth. A 7-year-old boy diagnosed with hypohidrotic ED since the age of 2 was referred for oral rehabilitation. The extraoral examination revealed clinical characteristics compatible with ED: discoloration around the eyes, thick lips, sparse scalp hair, etc. The intraoral evaluation revealed the presence of 8 deciduous teeth and 2 unerupted permanent lower canines. Several prostheses were temporarily installed until the patient completed facial growth. Ten years after the first contact with the patient (17 years old), the deciduous teeth were extracted and 6 implants were installed (FGM ArccysAngled) in the maxilla. The inferior removable prosthesis remains sustained by permanent canines. Although dental implants have provided encouraging outcomes for the rehabilitation of children with ED, this treatment must be defined according to the patient's age and demands.
