A CASE OF A LOCALLY AGGRESSIVE ODONTOGENIC FIBROMYXOMA

The World Health Organization defines odontogenic fibromyxoma as a benign odontogenic neoplasm characterized by stellate and spindle-shaped cells dispersed in a myxoid extracellular matrix, with a great amount of collagen. It should be included as a differential diagnosis of jaw tumors, which are difficult to diagnose. This is a rare case of odontogenic fibromyxoma in the mandibular region affecting a 27-year-old female patient reporting temporomandibular joint pain. A radiolucent, circumscribed, multilocular image in the region of the left mandibular branch was detected on panoramic radiography. The patient was submitted to multiple biopsies at different times and thorough histopathologic and immunohistochemical exams were performed. The conclusive diagnosis was only achieved after complete resection of the lesion. Although the clinical examination is fundamental and sovereign for the diagnosis, some cases require accurate complementary exams because of the histopathologic complexity of the lesion and its similarity with other pathologies.
