Summary: | Background
We performed a meta-analysis on randomized clinical trials (RCTs) comparing the effects of alfentanil and remifentanil on the candidates of endotracheal intubation.
Method
Literature searches of PubMed/Medline, Scopus, EMBASE, Web of Sciences, and Cochrane Library were performed from the inception to 30 February 2021. We selected all the published RCTs in the English language that investigated the effects of alfentanil vs. remifentanil injection in terms of duration of anesthesia (DA), heart rate (HR), systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP), arterial pressure (AP), number of coughs, number of jaw relaxations, and number of vocal cord openings in surgical patients undergoing endotracheal intubation.
Results
Nineteen RCTs with parallel designs were included. The findings indicated that remifentanil injection led to a significantly lower mean SBP compared to alfentanil injection in patients undergoing surgery. Alfentanil had no significant effect on the mean duration of anesthesia, mean HR, DBP, and mean AP compared with remifentanil. No detrimental effects of alfentanil injection on the number of coughs, jaw relaxation, and opening of vocal cord were observed in patients undergoing surgery compared to remifentanil-receiving groups.
Conclusion
The findings demonstrated that alfentanil and remifentanil have similar cardiovascular effects except for their effect on SBP. |
