Fluorescent proteins make possible the relatively straightforward study of favorite proteins within living cells, and cell biologists have become increasingly dependent on them as research tools. Why should this latest crop interest the average cell biologist? The limitations of existing fluorescent proteins have direct consequences for experimental design and interpretation. Shaner et al. address some of these drawbacks and present new variants that should extend our capabilities. |
