Summary: | Spontaneous polymerization (S‐Poly) is a novel process to form protective polymer coatings on aluminum and other metals. Here we discuss polymerization and coating properties when two fluorinated monomers are introduced into the S‐Poly system. The resulting coatings were characterized using attenuated total reflectance fourier transform infrared (ATR‐FTIR), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), optical microscope and other measurements. Fluorinated coatings showed excellent dielectric properties and strong hydrophobicity. Their dry adhesion strength was a little lower than the coatings in previous systems, but changed very little after immersion in hot water for several days. Some of the fluorinated coatings exhibited significantly improved corrosion resistance in most corrosion tests. |
