Examines every allegation regarding the Aum group and biological weapons, and documents that each and every one of their efforts in the biological weapons area either failed, or never existed at all. (Original abstract - amended) THE USE OF SARIN NERVE GAS IN A TOKYO SUBWAY BY THE AUM SHINRIKYO GROUP IN JAPAN HAS HAD A HUGE IMPACT ON NATIONAL SECURITY POLICIES IN THE UNITED STATES WHERE BILLION-DOLLAR PLANS FOR COUNTERING THE THREAT OF BIOLOGICAL AND CHEMICAL TERRORISM ARE BEING PUT INTO OPERATION. THIS ARTICLE EXAMINES THE WIDELY REPORTED EFFORTS OF THE AUM SHINRIKYO SECT TO PRODUCE BIOLOGICAL WEAPONS SUCH AS BOTULINUM TOXIN, ANTHRAX, Q FEVER AND EBOLA. IT ARGUES THAT THERE ARE TWO SIGNIFICANT POINTS TO MAKE ABOUT THE AUM STORY THAT PERTAIN TO "TERRORIST" GROUPS AND THEIR ABILITY TO PRODUCE BIOLOGICAL WEAPONS. THE FIRST IS THAT THE AUM UTTERLY AND TOTALLY FAILED, AFTER NO SMALL EXPENDITURE OF TIME AND MONEY. THE SECOND IS THAT THE CONSIDERED ASSESSMENT OR "LESSON" FROM THE EXPERIENCE SHOULD HAVE BEEN PRECISELY THE OPPOSITE OF THE ONE THAT HAS BEEN PURVEYED. |
