Controversies in the leading causative pathogen of infective endocarditis: Data from a single tertiary hospital in Belgium

According to the literature, S. aureus is now the most common causative microorganism for prosthetic valve endocarditis (PVE), followed by CNS and Streptococcus spp.1 Staphylococcus spp (with frequent resistance to methicillin), fungi and Gram-negative bacilli are the main causes of early PVE.
