Summary:Strong second harmonic generation (SHG) from LB monolayers of a new ionically combined nonlinear optical bis-chromophore zinc complex, bis(E)-N-octadecyl-4-[2-(4-dibutylaminophenyl)ethenyl] pyridinium bis (2-thione-1,3-dithiol-4,5-dimercapto) zinc (1), was observed even when the film was transferred at 5 mN/m. The second-order susceptibility (χ(2)ZZZ) is evaluated to be about 140 pmV−1, which is 2.8 times that of the corresponding dye iodide.
