Comparison of Methods for estimating the Bruise Volume of Apples

Several methods for estimating the size of apple bruises have been compared against the actual volume measured using a sectioning and image analysis technique. The estimation methods were not consistent, with large estimation errors at small bruise sizes. The estimation of bruise volume was shown to...

Description
Summary:Several methods for estimating the size of apple bruises have been compared against the actual volume measured using a sectioning and image analysis technique. The estimation methods were not consistent, with large estimation errors at small bruise sizes. The estimation of bruise volume was shown to be improved when the surface shape of the bruise was taken to be an ellipse instead of a circle. Various methods are recommended for the estimation of the bruise volume dependent on the range of the bruise sizes which are to be investigated.
