Summary: | BACKGROUND: Isotretinoin (13- cis retinoic acid) revolutionized the treatment of acne. Since the early 1980s patients suffering from severe forms of acne have been treated effectively, with less residual cosmetic or psychological damage. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this article is to provide a wide review of isotretinoin, including its clinical applications in dermatology, side effects and drug interactions. DISCUSSION: Isotretinoin affects epidermal cell growth and differentiation as well as sebaceous gland activity, and exhibits immunomodulatory and antiinflammatory properties, which are important in the treatment of a wide range of other cutaneous diseases - mainly disorders of keratinization and also in proliferative diseases.
