Comparison of the persistence of EPTC, metribuzin, and propanil in Saskatchewan field soils [Canada]

Abstract EPTC (S-ethyl dipropylthiocarbamate), metribuzin (4-amino-6-tert-butyl-3-(methylthio)-as-triazin-5(4H)-one) and propanil (3',4-dichloropropionanilide) are used for weed control in western Canada. Although metribuzin and propanil are applied as post-emergence treatments, residues following application invariably come into contact with soil making their soil persistence a matter of concern. EPTC is a soil incorporated herbicide. The field persistence of these herbicides has not been investigated in Saskatchewan soils, though the loss of metribuzin from other Canadian field soils has been reported. The work to be described was undertaken to compare the field persistence of EPTC, metribuzin and propanil at three locations in Saskatchewan, using the small plot technique that the authors have used for similar studies with other herbicides.
AbstractList S-ethyl dipropylthiocarbamate (EPTC), metribuzin, and propanil are effective weed killers used extensively in Western Canada. Field persistence of EPTC, metribuzin, and propanil at three sites in Saskatchewan was studied. Field persistence of the herbicides in the area had not previously been studied, although the loss of metribuzin at other sites has been documented.
