Summary:Sorption coefficients of a series of hydrophobic organic compounds were determined for 2 sediments with high (HOC) and low organic carbon (LOC) contents. The mixtures were dissolved in water either with a generator column or by a carrier, present at 0.5 per cent by volume in water. Acetone, methanol or propanol were used as carriers. The influence of the bactericide sodium azide on sorption was examined and found to be negligible. For most compounds, the HOC sediment gave higher sorption coefficients than the LOC sediment. Only the most hydrophobic compounds showed small differences. Carriers reduced the sorption coefficients on HOC sediment for all compounds; this effect was only seen on the LOC sediment with the most hydrophobic compounds. The highest dry weight and TOC concentrations were found in the aqueous phase of the HOC sediment. Methanol and propanol increased TOC levels significantly. The optimal experimental conditions for measuring sorption coefficients would avoid carrier solvents and use a bactericide to prevent interference from bacterial activity. There are 31 references.
