Description
Summary:Barium titanate, BaTiO3, has applications in optical information processing by using its excellent photorefractive properties. Growth of BaTiO3 by the top-seeded solution growth technique is unusually difficult compared to the growth of other crystals. Single-crystal quality is very sensitive to temperature changes. We discuss techniques for the solution growth of BaTiO3. We apply continuous weight determination to help understand and control the growth process. Single-crystal 100 gram boules have been grown and are within ∼ 10% of the weight predicted from the phase diagram.
