Summary:Nurses often are responsible for administering narcotic analgesics to patients with pain due to cancer or the treatment of cancer. Because of frequent use of these agents, and their various and dramatic effects throughout the body, it is important to understand their pharmacological properties and appropriate therapeutic use. This article reviews the actions and side effects, appropriate selection and use of narcotic analgesics and provides guidelines for administration.
