Description
Summary:The nature of scaly buds, homologies of their bud scales and degrees of preformation of contained leaf primordia are briefly described. Distinction is made among vegetative, reproductive, mixed, latent, and adventitious buds. Character of buds as associated with position along and around their supporting shoots and with relative vigour of those supporting shoots is discussed. Reference is made to how knowledge of buds and their fates is useful not only in species identification but also in understanding and modelling development of tree crowns, and in how inter- and intra-generic differences must be accounted for when devising measures to affect development in tree crowns.
