Summary:The concept of the functional design of aviation complexes, the stage preceding the traditional stages of structural, layout, and outline design, is developed. It is shown that the developed concept of functional design optimizes the existing process by reducing the time and material costs for creating promising aircraft models due to the exclusion of obviously unacceptable options for the appearance of a promising aircraft from further in-depth analysis. Methods and algorithms for solving problems arising at the stage of functional design proposed based on the optimization apparatus are described. The effectiveness of the developed methods and algorithms is illustrated by an example of the formation of the appearance of a promising transport aircraft based on the developed concept.
