PIXE microanalysis of trace elements of the normoxic, ischemic and reperfused rat heart

Via PIXE with a 3 × 3 μm 2 proton microbeam spatial distributions of Na, Mg, P, S, K, Ca and Fe were measured in 50 × 50 μm 2 areas of rat heart, sliced into 10–15 μm thick cryosections. The hearts were subjected to normal perfusion, ischemia and reperfusion. Substantial changes were found in tissue...

Description
Summary:Via PIXE with a 3 × 3 μm 2 proton microbeam spatial distributions of Na, Mg, P, S, K, Ca and Fe were measured in 50 × 50 μm 2 areas of rat heart, sliced into 10–15 μm thick cryosections. The hearts were subjected to normal perfusion, ischemia and reperfusion. Substantial changes were found in tissue after 40 min of reperfusion, where locally elevated Ca levels and decreased K levels were observed. For assessment of artefacts due to sample preparation and handling also electron microscopy was used.
