Abstract | Microbial fuel cells (MFCs) are bio-electrochemical devices that convert the chemical energy of biomass into electrical energy utilizing microorganisms as biocatalysts, thereby capturing tremendous attention as a sustainable and promising technology. Electricigen is a main limiting factor for the MFCs performance. This review focuses on the recent progresses about the novel electricigens discovery and identification technology. In addition, molecular tools and genetic systems of four model microorganisms (Shewanella oneidensis, Geobacter sulfurreducens, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans) are summarize. Furthermore, the impressive improvement strategies on electricigens over the last three years are highlighted. Finally, the challenges and outlook of electricigens are discussed. So the review offers valuable information on the enhancement of MFCs from electricigens point of view. |
