AbstractList The problem of impurity accumulation in a tokamak and some possible control techniques to counteract such problems are reviewed. The possible application of such impurity control techniques in the future Engineering Test Facility (ETF) is also discussed.
The accumulation of contaminant ions in fusion plasmas during startup and burn can create unfavorable operating conditions. It is, therefore, important to control impurities in the plasma. Procedures considered for such a control include techniques for inhibiting their flow in the plasma. The reported survey includes a brief study of such techniques and their possible applicability to a reactor plasma. The techniques discussed are related to impurity flow reversal, gas blanket, modification of transport at the plasma edge, and a simplified divertor concept, the expanded boundary configuration. A brief description is given of the tolerable level of impurities. The various particle and energy fluxes from the plasma are discussed, taking into account how they are influenced by the available external control methods.
